Mutli-Talented

Gwen Ehler is a seasoned music educator, having begun teaching piano in junior high school!

Gwen started piano at the age of five. Gwen’s first teacher taught her how to read music from a lead sheet. This first teacher recommended that Gwen study with a student of Paul Manz named Joan Elander. Paul Manz was a well known arranger of hymns. He also judged some music contests that Gwen participated in while in junior high. After moving outside the Twin Cities, Gwen studied with Audrey Larson of Chaska MN. Her guidance helped Gwen earn a scholarship at Mt. Mercy College.

Gwen studied piano Pedagogy with William and Patricia Medley and earned a degree in Piano Pedagogy in 1983.  Gwen has had several students over the years along with playing both piano and organ for several churches in Cedar Rapids and the surrounding area. Gwen is well experienced in organ, having been a church organist at various churches for 50 years.

Gwen teaches piano, organ, and beginning flute. Each lesson is tailored to the student. She can start your learning no matter your experience or your age; whether you are a complete beginner or have had years of experience. Once you have mastered the fundamentals of your instrument, Gwen can tailor your learning to match your musical preferences. Whether you gravitate toward classical music or French piano or pop or jazz, and whether you prefer to learn by reading fully written music or playing creatively using lead sheets or playing by improvisation, Gwen can help!

Gwen teaches out of fp Music Academy’s Troubadour studio in Cedar Rapids, IA and at Music151 in Fairfax, IA.

Testimonials

Our daughter took piano lessons from Gwen for 3-4 years. During that time our daughter learned to read music and advance in her technique. She went from learning the keys on the piano, playing simple exercises to playing more advanced songs. Gwen is patient, practical and flexible. She often encouraged our daughter to make the musical piece her own. She was very in tune to when our daughter put in the practice time and when she didn’t. Piano lessons with Gwen helped our daughter advance with band. Her band teacher often commented on how well she did and attributed this to playing piano. We know Gwen has played a huge part in our daughter’s ability to succeed in band.    -Tina & Jackie-

If you’re looking for a piano teacher with demonstrations from being a well-versed organist, the sooner you connect with Gwen, the faster you’ll excel in piano with a solid technique and she’ll challenge you to grow by inspiring a love for music while also giving constant, detailed feedback. Gwen is an active member of the Beethoven Club and I have (had) the pleasure of seeing Gwen attend many live musical performances in the area. In separate years, both my sons were awarded blue ribbons from the local Marion competitions, which they have proudly displayed since that time. Both my sons are now on their own but can be found playing snippets from the same pieces that they memorized years before; all thanks to the neuron-engaging activities from these past musical activities. Thank you Gwen! For your child, you can also look for someone who majored in music education with a focus in piano performance. This is Gwen Ehler’s wheelhouse. She taught my kids basic skills like reading music, theory and general foundation of piano playing while also demonstrating weekly how these skills are applied.    -Dana Medin-
